Nick Newbury – A Dad’s preparation

Nick was initially very sceptical around why you need to prepare for pregnancy although once he got started he became aware of the reasoning behind it. Nick has a successful travel company and has seen many things, yet pregnancy was a whole new ball game. His preparation led to books and DVD’s on all sorts of subjects and his view transformed from hospital being the place to give birth to fully supporting the idea of a homebirth. A dad today is not prepared in the same way that one would have been many years ago. Some men have never held a baby and technical details like putting on a nappy are a world away. At Pregnancy and Preparation we enjoyed seeing Nick’s evolution to fatherhood and wish him all the best with his son Luca… and more perhaps?!

As a dad, the journey is different from anything we are used to or familiar with. It will also be different for each person. Even a Mum and Dad can have a different experience with pregnancy, birth or parenting. Obviously there are many factors that influence that experience and Sebastian gives his views on how to help your partner and what they found useful. Working with Sebastien I found him very enthusiastic around doing research and understanding the details around nutrition and how the body works. He has become passionate about live food. This is food that has not lost most of its energy, vitamins and minerals. People are often shocked to find that around 70% of nutrients are lost with cooking. That means that raw or live food is the better choice when thinking about giving a Mum and baby the tools they need for growth and repair. Having worked with Sebastien through the pregnancy and the first 15 months has been inspirational and Pregnancy and Preparation has enjoyed his excitement. In the video you get a sense of his commitment as a Dad and watching him and his boy interact is a delight.

Boys in the birth room – is it right?

Should boys be in the birth room? The answer is yes and no.

The choice is for Mum to make – we are only the Sous Chef and Dad. Leo Moynihan is very clear about what the man’s role is during birth. The birth process is a finely tuned orchestra of chemicals that need to be co-ordinated and during the birth process a woman has every right to be unpredictable, sensitive or forceful. This is human physiology at its best and you do not argue with it unless you want to disturb this important moment that is birth. Leo is a Dad who has real clarity around birth and the male role. Listen to his suggestions and enjoy your journey.
